Freshmen Pick Adams, Leverett in House Poll

On the eve of the deadline for House applications, more than 50 per cent of the freshmen polled at the Union last night expressed a preference for Adams and Leverett Houses. Although third in the voting, Quincy House lagged considerably behind the top two.

Whose first choice was Leverett overwhelmingly gave physical appearance as the reason for their preference. Among the attractive qualities of Adams were listed "diversification of personalities," the drama society, and the swimming pool, in that order.

Despite their revealing interest in politics, most of those choosing Quincy made little attempt to conceal their attraction to its physical facilities. In answer to "Why did you pick this House?" one student wrote "material comfort," another, "Go down and take a look for yourself."

Lowell House was usually selected because of its Master and "excellent tutors." There was frequent mention of the bell tower, and one freshman like Lowell because it was "quiet...no polls like this one."

Those applying to Eliot often stated as a reason that their fathers had lived there, although some listed the Master as a deciding factor.

Vague Reasons

Many of the 350 participating in the poll expressed vague notions such as "I felt like it" and "It seemed like a good idea," and most of them, "It's where my roommate wants to go," as their reasons. The fact that students in traditional Houses will be eligible to transfer to the tenth House when it is built perhaps influenced some of the choices.

Not all of the freshmen displayed a concern over the special attributes of each House. One applicant wrote, "I thought that by choosing a House not flooded with applicants, I would have a good chance of getting a room to my liking."
