KIRKLAND CAPTURES SWIM CROWN

Kirkland's swimming team defeated defending champion Quincy, 27-33, Thursday night to capture the House championship.

Tied for first place, both Kirkland and Quincy entered the meet with 6-0 records. A victory in the 200-yard medley relay proved to be the deciding event for Kirkland, as the Deacons sped the distance in 1:56.2 minutes.

Joel Kotin took the 50-yard breast-stroke in 31.9 seconds for Kirkland, with Tom Angell of Quincy second and team-mate Dick Carey third. Fred Casperson and Bill Stiles placed one-two in the 50-yard butterfly for Kirkland, as Jim Schroeder of Quincy placed third.

Quincy was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle relay, paced by Jon Wernette and Schroeder. Wernette won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.3 seconds trailed by Stiles and Schroeder.

In the 50-yard breast stroke, Dennis Smith of Quincy beat Kirkland's Gary Morrow and Schroeder with a time of 30.0 seconds.
