Cadets Triumph, Set Mile Record

Army collected some unexpected points early in the meet Saturday at Briggs Cage to beat the varsity track team, 60 1/2 to 43 1/2, in the Crimson's first team appearance since Dec. 16.

With a first in the 35-pound weight and in the shot put (Art Doten and Rick deLone), the Crimson started as expected; but its depth in these usually strong weight events was lacking. Then, in the mile, a record-breaking performance by Cadet Rob Lingle upset the Crimson's Mark Mullin.

Lingle passed Mullin with three laps to go, withstood a brief sprint by his challenger, and finished in 4:12.6, a Cage and meet record. Mullin, holder of the old record, finished in 4:13.7, which also bettered the old mark.

Harvard gained first places in the next two events--Don Kirkland in the 600 and sophomore Jack Spitsberg in the hurdles; but Army took second and third in these races and then swept the dash for nine important points.
