When Cambridge traffic director Rudolph declares a "snow storm emergency" this winter, the main streets of the city will become "emergency arteries." Any cars left parked on either side of one of these streets during a "snow storm emergency" will be in for a $15 fine plus towing charges.

Parking on the rest of the Cambridge streets during snow storms will be restricted to the side which has the even house numbers. Illegal parking on side streets will cost the car owner $5 plus towing fee.

The new ruling is scheduled to go into effect January 1, but should there be a major storm before that time, Rudolph says he can put the ruling into effect immediately.

The traffic director plans a six-hour advance notice of a "snow storm emergency" to give people enough time to move cars from places they shoudn't be parked. He added that signs designating what streets are to become "emergency arteries" should be going up soon.
