Oberlin and Colby Colleges have reentered the National Defense Education Act student loan program.
Both colleges had previously refused to join NDEA because of a provision in the Act which required applicants to affirm that they did not support or believe in any subversive organization. President Kennedy signed an amendment Oct. 17 abolishing this disclaimer affidavit.
At the same time, Kennedy signed an amendment making it a crime for an applicant for NDEA funds to be a member of a subversive organization which had registered or been called to register under the McCarren Act.
The Communist Party, which has not yet registered with the government, will go on trial Dec. 11 on 12 counts of failure to register. The Party faces a maximum fine of $10,000 in each count.
