Varsity Whipped Penn Last Year

The Harvard-Penn game last year was a shellacking that the Quakers are trying hard to forget. They never stood a chance, as Crimson backs ran helter-skelter through the weak Red defense, shaming the Philadelphia team 37 to 6.

Penn got the ball into Crimson territory twice--once on a personal four, and again on the Quakers' long goal, which was scored in the final seconds of the game.

Harvard scored in almost every way possible: on a touchdown pass, long runs, an interception, a field goal, and a draw play up the middle of the Penn line.

Bill Grana scored the first on a run around the right end, and Ward converted to make the score 7-0.

On the opening play of the second quarter Penn kicked to midfield, Crimson quarterback Mike Bassett ran a series of seven plays to the Quacker 18, and Ward kicked the field goal.

Rick Beizer soon thereafter intercepted a pass thrown by quarterback Bill Gray, and raced 50 yards for another touchdown. After several routine exchanges Humenuk threw a pass to Hudepohl who trotted across the goal line to make the score 30-0.

Harvard's final tally came in the first set of downs in the second half. Grana took the ball on his own 30, ran to the Penn 43, was stopped momentarily by Quacker quarterback Gray, and then continued on his way until he had scored. Ward converted for the Crimson's 37th point.

Penn's only score came on an eight yard pass from Gray to end Bill Miller, from the Harvard 26. The conversion attempt failed, and time ran out before Penn could kick-off.
