Dartmouth Five Upsets Crimson in Ivy Opener

Varsity basketball coach Floyd Wilson was right last week when he said that the Crimson's narrow 72-64 triumph over weak Carnegie Tech was an unhealthy sign. In its first outing since the Tech clash, the varsity bowed to Dartmouth, 61 to 55, Saturday at Hanover.

Thus the Crimson's Ivy League campaign started off with its usual thud. The varsity entered the game with a surprising 7-3 record, and it was facing a perfectly punchless Dartmouth squad.

But, as in the past, the Crimson seemed to be unduly fazed by the Hanover locale. The long, bumpy bus ride, and the rabid fans breathing hotly down their necks apparently unnerved the Crimson players.

Guard Steve Spohn, Dartmouth's only bona fide star, led the Indians with 29 points. Spohn connected on 11 of 21 field goal attempts. Bill Shanahan added 12 points, and Sam Barton 10.

Denny Lynch was the only varsity man to hit double figures, with 23 points. Captain Gary Borchard had nine, Gene Augustine eight Joe Deering seven, Pete Kelley four, and Bill Danner four.

The freshman basketball team will play B.C. tonight at 8 p.m. in the IAB.

In other Ivy action over the weekend, Yale edged Brown, 59 to 58, and Penn downed Princeton, 64 to 56.
