Magazines Continue to Cite Phillips As Head Harvard Student Council

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In spite of anything Harvard or Howard J Phillips '62 has done about it. Phillips is still being cited as President of Harvard's Student Council in publications heralding the arrival of conservatism to the American college campus.

It seems to make little difference that Phillips was removed from his position in September when placed on academic probation, and that Harvard no longer has a Student Council.

The most recent example is the December 22 issue of the National Association of Manufacturers News, in an article called "growing Conservatism Finds Expression in Young Americans for Freedom." The account was excerpted from a recent publication of the civic Affairs Monthly, where Phillips' former title was also noted.

Although Phillips spoke at the 66th Annual Congress of American Industry simply as "a Harvard University student and member of the YAF" and was identified as such in the Dec. 15 NAM News, the later News issue reverts to mentioning his former position, and with an improvement: "President of the Harvard Student Government."

Phillips said he knew nothing about the article. Insisting he is not responsible for editorial errors, he pointed out that when his former title had been suggested for the program notes of a National Industrial Council meeting at which he spoke on Dec. 4, he requested that it be removed. (It was.)

It now appears, in fact, that Phillips may have been less responsible for the widespread "misuse" of his Council office than last year's charges would indicate. In at least one case where he was supposed to have signed a letter "President of the Harvard Student Council"--a letter which later reprinted with that signature in the November issue of Conservative Thunder--it has become known that Phillips was not at fault.

Allan P. Howell, President of Conservative Thunder, has sent Dean Monro a copy of Phillips' latter proving Phillips did not use his title. Apparently Howell himself thought of the idea of including it.

"The error is primarily mine," Howell wrote, "since I had known of (Phillips') active and fruitful tenure as President of the Student Council."
