ADA Grants Niebuhr 'Roosevelt Day' Award

Reinhold Niebuhr, visiting professor of Theology, received the Roosevelt Day Award of the Massachusetts Americans for Democratic Action at a dinner Saturday night.

In presenting the award, Samuel H. Beer, professor of Government and A.D.A. national chairman, called Niebuhr a "leader in the struggle for freedom, justice and human dignity."

Niebuhr was a founder of the Union for Democratic Action, the forerunner of the A.D.A. Earlier he was a leading critic of Henry Ford's anti-union policies and a vocal supporter of Robert LaFollette, the Progressive candidate for President in 1924.

President Kennedy sent a telegram to the Roosevelt Day Dinner, praising the A.D.A. as a "broker of ideas." In many periods of our history," the telegram said, "liberals have brought to bear on political problems special gifts of insight and imagination."

As visiting professor of Theology, Niebuhr will teach Gov 110 this spring.
