Student Report Delays Faculty NCAA Decision

Faculty Committee on Athletics will postpone its decision on the hockey team's participation in the NCAA tournament for about another two weeks to hear recommendations from the Undergraduate Athletic Council.

The Faculty had hoped to announce its ruling during the first week of January, according to Dean Monro, a member of the Committee.

For the past two years, the Faculty has prohibited the varsity from accepting an invitation to the post-season National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, presumably in protest of alleged recruiting practices by Western colleges which have recently dominated the tourney. Last year, the Committee agreed to let the Undergraduate Athletic Council air its views.

Monro indicated that the Faculty had more or less already made its decision, after further discussion this month, but would hold final announcement of it, because of its promise to the UAC.

The UAC fact-finding committee has prepared a first draft of its report and expects to present the finished version to the Faculty sometime this week, according to Thomas G. Heintzman '62, hockey representative on the UAC. He and Mark Woodbury '62, chairman of the UAC, are in charge of the report.

Monro said last week that the Faculty is anxious to reveal its final decision. At its Feb. 5 meeting the Faculty Committee is expected to decide not only about NCAA participation, but also about accepting a probable bid to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, to be held Mar. 6, one week before the NCAA's.

Report May Be Private

Heintzman would not describe the undergraduates' recommendations, compiled after the varsity hockey team completed a four-game trip to the Midway during Christmas vacation. He said that he was not sure whether the report would be made public.

Members of the UAC committee that prepared the report are Heintzman, Woodbury, Benjamin B. Baker '62, varsity hockey manager and manager's representative on the UAC; H. Grady Watts '62, lacrosse captain; and John M. Livingood '62, golf captain and minor sports representative.
