Whipple to Get Prize For Satellite Tracking

Fred L. Whipple, professor of Astronomy, will receive today the highest award of the American Astronautical Society, given for contribution to space flight.

In winning the award, Whipple joins such previous recipients as Wernher Von Braun (1957), Hermann Oberth (1955), and James A. Van Allen (1958).

The citation particularly mentions Whipple's work with satellite-tracking programs at the University Observatory on Garden St. and 12 other stations in the United States and foreign countries. He has also organized the "Moonwatch" network, which has stations in all parts of the world.
