TV Show to Explore Conservative Trend In Student Views

NBC-TV will explore the alleged rise of conservatism among American college students on "David Brinkley's Journal" tonight at 10:30 p.m.

The program will feature film clips of the 14th Congress of the United States National Student Association, focusing on the development of a resolution urging the abolition of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Representatives from 388 colleges and universities attended the Congress, held last August.

Opening the show will be excerpts from speeches by Sen. Barry Goldwater and Sen. John Tower, in which they argue that college students are becoming increasingly conservative in their political viewpoints.

The film will follow the HCUA resolution from its introduction in a subcommittee through to a heated debate between leaders of the liberal and conservative factions before a gathering of the entire Congress. The delegates, asked to choose between requesting abolition of the HCUA or just condemning its past actions, voted for abolition.
