HRO Reveals Schedule For Mexican Trip

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Harvard - Radcliffe Orchestra has drawn up a final itinerary for its Mexican tour this summer. HRO manager Prescott B. Wintersteen '63 travelled to Mexico during Christmas vacation to make arrangements for the trip.

Although the primary purpose of the group's two-month visit is to "integrate itself into Mexican musical activities." HRO president George A. Goldberg '62 also hopes that the trip will further friendship and political understanding. Among the eight cities on the itinerary are several which have been "unfriendly to the United States" in the past, Goldberg stated.

65 To Make Trip

Nearly half of the $45,000 budget has been raised. In order that all expenses be paid for the sixty-five students making the trip, the Orchestra is still soliciting contributions.

Shortly before the summer, the group will hold a strenuous four-day researsal period. Although plans are not yet final, several Faculty members have expressed a willingness to lead informal seminars on Mexican history, customs, and institutions sometime during the coming semester.

The Orchestra will leave the United States in the middle of June and will spend three weeks in Mexico City and about four days each in Monterrey, Guanajuato, Guadalajara. Moreila, Puebla, Jalapa, and Merida. The students will stay in private homes and in universities.

Included in their schedule will be concerts, lecture demonstrations and rehearsals in all the various cities visited. Rehearsals will be open to the public, with the Orchestra supplemented by Mexican musicians from local districts. Mexican solists will be featured in addition to the HRO's regular classical repertoire.

Mexican composers will be invited to hear their own works played, HRO president Goldberg added. The Orchestra will hold lecture-demonstrations for Mexican universities and music conservatories; small chamber music groups will be dispatched to various primary schools.

The Mexico trip will be the Orchestra's first excursion out of the country
