Hockey Team Downs Cornell, 5-1; Grannis, Ikauniks Score Two Each

In its Ivy opener, the Crimson defeated Cornell, 5 to 1 before 1,000 fans in Watson rink.

Penalties, rather than scoring marked play in the first period. Jerry Kostand-off, Cornell's sophomore wing, collected the first of Cornell's six penalties in the first period, entering the box at 1:43 for interference and at 5:31 for slashing. Defenseman Rudolph Mateka and wing Webb Nichols also served penalties for charging, and James Stevens, wing, was sent to the box at 12:58 for high sticking.

On the Crimson side, the only first period penalty was forward Ike Ikaunik's double penalty for misconduct and high stick.

The large number of penalties in the first period kept play wide open. Cornell spent over half the period playing with one or more men down. Fourteen saves by Cornell goalie Laing Kennedy and the five to six additional stops by the defense in front of the net prevented the Crimson from scoring, even while Cornell was down a man in the penalty box.

One of Cornell's favorite plays was the try at a breakaway goal. Floating a man out front, the Cornell players would attempt a pass through the defensive grouping in front of their own cage.

At 14:39 Crimson defenseman Dave Johnston assisted by Tim Taylor and Gene Kinasewich tallied a goal for the Crimson. Cornell was down a man at the time. Johnston picked up the puck from the boards, and hit it into the lower right hand corner of the cage from 40 feet out on the ice.

Dave Grannis scored the second Crimson goal, with assists by Dave Morse and Ike Ikauniks. Grannis flipped the puck over the prostrate Cornell goalie into the cage from ten feet in front, after having taken a pass from Ikauniks. With less than a minute to go in the second period, Kinasewich made a break for the puck, but Cornell's goalie Kennedy left his cage and raced up to the blue line, just beating Kinasewich to the puck.

Cornell scored its one and only goal with 2:56 left in the third period. Cornell's center Stephen Poole, breaking down the middle of the rink, cut to the left, and flipped the puck to Kostandoff, who fired a high backhand shot over Crimson goalie Bob Bland's raised glove.

Effective Crimson teamolay contributed three goals in the third period. At 9:36, Grannis picked up the puck from Johnston and drilled it past Kennedy to score.

Cornell coach Paul Patten pulled Kennedy with two minutes left to play in the game in an attempt to even up the score.

Gene Kinasewich, shooting against an empty net, missed and hit the post. Cornell goalie Kennedy returned with 1:20 to play, and remained halfway between the blue line and his goal. Dave Grannis gave Ike Ikauniks a long lead pass from the blue line which Ikauniks shot into the cage at 18:48. At 19:30 Ikauniks drove forward to score the final goal of the game.

Tonight at 8 p.m. the Crimson meets Boston College at Boston Arena.
