The varsity baseball team defeated Holy Cross, 4 to 3, Saturday, and M.I.T., 10-1, Friday, but was pretty sloppy about the whole thing.
The Holy Cross game was a case of who was going to be most effective in losing it. Harvard tried hard as it blow a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth. Dave Morse's error on a double play provided the spark for the Crusader's two-run rally.
But Holy Cross was not to be outdone. Mike Drummey's safe bunt and Dick Shima's single to center put men on first and second for the Crimson in the bottom of the eighth.
Morse then hit to the second baseman. Who forced Shima at second. The relay to first was wide and Morse was safe, but Drummey got caught off third by the Crusader first baseman when he took too wide a turn.
When the first baseman threw to third, Drummey headed home and slid under catcher John Allen's tag. Allen jumped up and down in protest and threw the ball away to show his displeasure with the umpire's decision.
Morse Scores Winning Run
The only trouble was that he forgot to call time out, and Morse scored the winning run all the way from first base as Allen continued his dispute with the unyielding man in blue.
Roy Williams pitched the first eight innings to gain his first win of the year. He walked five, struck out four, and allowed seven hits.
In beating Tech, the Crimson took advantage of 10 walks and seven errors to break open a close game in the final three innings.
Tom Boone pitched his second straight complete game since becoming a starter to get credit for the win. The junior left-hander, who plays halfback in the Fall, walked seven, struck out four, and gave up four hits. Boone also knocked in three runs with two hits.
