In weather more suitable for football than for tennis, the undefeated varsity tennis team picked up another impressive victory yesterday afternoon at the Soldiers Field courts, beating Williams 7 to 2.
The Ephmen, previously unbeaten, were highly rated, and the match was tougher than the final score would indicate. Only the first singles and first doubles matches were decided in straight sets.
The Crimson took five of the six singles to clinch matters before the doubles play started. Bob Bowditch led the way for the varsity with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Clyde Buck at first singles. All the other singles matches had begun before Bowditch arrived, bundled up in sweat suit and windbreaker, but he was the first man off the court. It was the fifth straight time he had beaten Buck in the past three years, and he might as well take the Williams man home and stuff him as a trophy.
At number two, Paul Sullivan finished strongly to defeat John Botts, 4-6, 63, 6-3. Williams' Bruce Brian, playing number three, made two big comebacks, but they weren't enough to overtake Doug Walter, who won, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. In the final set Brian made up two service breaks to come back from 0-5.
Captain Pete Smith gave the Crimson its fourth singles victory, overcoming hard-serving Bob Mahland, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, but at number five Keith Martin lost a close one to Ned Shaw, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Gary Adelman, playing number six for the varsity, defeated Graddy Johnson, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0.
With the match clinched and the presure off, Bowditch and Sullivan won a sloppy first doubles match, 6-3, 6-3, from Botts and Mahland. At second doubles, however, Smith and Bob Schwartxman lost to Buck and Brian, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Walter and Martin rounded out the Crimson victory with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Shaw and Brooks Goddard.
In unofficial contests played only for the exercise, Dave Moore and Kal Pollen lost singles matches, but Adelman and Mark Woodbury won at fourth doubles in another three-set affair.
The Crimson's next match is the season's biggest one--at Princeton Saturday afternoon.
