Lacrosse, Tennis, Track Teams Pick Captains For Next Year's Varsities

A record-setting miler, an indestruotible attackman, and a game sophomore surprise will captain the Crimson's track, lacrosse, and tennis varsities next year.

In recent elections, Mark H. Mullin '62, of Dunster House and Mt. Carroll, Ill., was chosen to lead next year's spring track team: H. Grady Watts, Jr. '62, of Kirkland House and Manhasset, N.Y., was picked for lacrosse; and Paul W. Sullivan '63, of Dunster House and Belmont, was selected for tennis.

Mullin climaxed a striking season with sensational performances in the Heptagonal meet and against Yale. In Philadelphia's Heps he set a meet and University record with a 4:07.1 mile, beating Yale's Bobby Mack for the only win of the day.

Against Yale, a week later, Mullin again outpaced Mack, but more astounding, he also took a victory in the 880 away from the Bulldogs' famed Tommy Carroll, to give Harvard the psychological injection necessary for the Crimson's astonishing upset win.

Watts also starred for Harvard in competition against Yale. Injured first at Princeton and later against Dartmouth, the agile attackman scored twice against the Eli and, more important, added eight assists to his total of 51 which is currently high in the nation.

According to Crimson tennis coach Jack Barnaby, Sullivan, who in his first year of varsity play was a constant challenge to number-one man Bob Bowditch, showed "great maturity" when he reached the finals of the New England Inter-collegiate championships last weekend. Losing to Bowditch in the finals, Sullivan teamed with him to win the doubles title for Harvard, despite painful leg cramps.

Also announced were next year's managers for these sports. D. Roger Ferguson '62, of Dunster House and East Syracuse, N.Y., will be undergraduate manager for track, and Steyen M. Goldman '62, of Leverett House and Brooklyn, N.Y., will manage varsity spring track.

Peter J. Heck '63, of Leverett House and Chestertown, Md., will manage lacrosse, and James D. Wilson '62, of Adams House and The Dalles, Ore., will manage tennis.
