Kirkland Rally Fails; Calhoun Nine Wins

A vallant lato-inning rally by the champion Kirkland House baseball team fell short at New Haven last Saturday when Yale's undefeated Calhoun College made the most of five early unearned runs and hung on for a 10-8 victory.

After yielding nine runs in the first two innings to Yale's intramural champs, the game Kirkland team suddenly began to find the range and cut into Calhoun's load.

In the fifth inning, with the score at 10 to 1, centerfielder Bob Selig drove in one run with his first of three hits after walks to Sam Hopkins and Doug Donald son. Leo Fishman followed with a single inside the first base line for two more.

The following inning Kirkland scored four runs after two men had been retired. Hopkins, Donaldson and Larry Galindo were hit by pitched balls, and John Adler drove in two with a single to center, taking second on the play at the plate. Selig completed the scoring with a two-run safety to left.

Kirkland's starting pitcher, Bob Stein, finally settled down to strike out 12, allowing nine walks and six hits. The Deacons' seven hits sent Calhoun's starter, Bill Moshary, to the showers for the first time this season. Kirkland's defensive standout was catcher Frank Ward.
