Coach Lauds Sullivan For Placing Second In Intercollegiates

Tennis coach Jack Barnaby had high praise yesterday for sophomore Paul Sullivan, who took a surprising second place in the New England Intercollegiate tennis championships over the weekend.

Sullivan, who was defeated by Crimson captain Bob Bowditch in the singles finals at Amherst, then joined with his teammate to win the doubles title in straight sets.

Barnaby said that Sullivan showed "great maturity" in surviving several tough draws and giving Bowditch a good match in spite of leg cramps. "He has never shown such maturity or consistency in his game before," stated Sullivan's coach, "and looks like a great prospect for number one man next year."

Although Barnaby had expected Bowditch to be tops in the tournament, he was surprised by Sullivan's performance. He now hopes that the pair will enter the NCAA doubles and singles tourney next month. Commencement conflicts and expenses may, however, prevent the two from traveling to Iowa for the annual competition.

Upon his return from Amherst, Barnaby also commended Bowditch and the whole Crimson team, which finished one point ahead of Yale in the intercollegiates, with 20 points.
