Ivy League colleges experienced a drop in applications for the second straight year, with only Harvard and Dartmouth holding firm. Nonetheless, more prospective freshmen (13,311) were admitted to fill more places (8,720) than ever before. Harvard was the most in demand, accepting only 26 per cent of its applicants.
Reached in Minneapolis, Humphrey Doermann '52, who will become Director of Admissions next fall, said that the drop in the number of students trying for Ivy schools probably reflects more careful screening at the secondary school level.
