Crimson offered fell far behind Tufts in the first half of the Greater Boston Golf. Championships yesterday and will need a near miracle to overcome the Jumbos is stroke lead in the tournament's last day of the Merrimac Valley CC in Haverhill today.
Shooting at 407 total to Tufts 394, the Crimson held a slim edge over third-place M.I.T. Boston College was close behind in fourth place with a 413, while Brandeis (428), Northeastern (430), and B.U. (440) followed, virtually out of the running for top place honors.
It was a sad day for the varsity, who had easily defeated Tufts 5-2 in the opening match of the season under match play scoring. Captain Fiske Warren shot a 77, the Crimson low, and tied for third place in individual scoring, but his teammates didn't fare nearly so well.
Herb Wollan scored an 31, John Livingood an 82, Bruce Johnstone an 83, and Dave Rudnick and George Duffy, 34's for the varsity. Bob Holton pulled in an 85, but only the top five scores were counted.
Tufts went out in front on the strength of two scores below 80. Barry Bruce had a 73, low for the day, and Robert Morgenestein had a 76.
Penalties were largely responsible for the Crimson's high score, as Cooney Welland's golfers were penalized 20 strokes on a course they had never before seen. Livingood hit four balls out of bounds for 8 penalty strokes and Rudnick hit three but for six penalty strokes.
