Sophomore Bob Holton held onto a slim lead through the 18th hole to break a 3-3 tie and give the Crimson golf team a tense 4-3 win over Penn Friday in New York. In the double match the varsity also swept past Columbia, 6-1.
Playing in the number three position, Holton was one-up going into the last hole, which he parred to clinch the victory. Before he finished, Al Lipsky, Herb Wollan, and Dave Rudnick had each contributed wins in the five, six, and seven spots.
The double victory boosted the team's Ivy League hopes after the disappointing 7-0 loss to Princeton last week. The Crimson's League record is now 2-1, and it's overall record is 5-2. Defeating Penn was especially sweet, as the Quakers have had a definite edge over Coach Cooney Welland's team for the past several years.
Team Averages 80
Captain Fiske Warren, playing in the number one position, George Duffy, at two, and Bruce Johnstone at four were the only losers against Penn. Both Warren and Duffy, however, downed their Columbia opponents in that 6-1 win. Johnstone, visibly bothered by several vaccination shots in his arms, had a bad day and was the only Crimson golfer to lose to both Penn and Columbia.
The low score for the match was brought in by Duffy, who shot a 75. The team's average as a whole centered around 80--good, but open to improvement.
