Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
PRINCETON, N.J., March 4--Over 3000 highly partisan fans jammed Dillon Gym tonight to watch Princeton clinch its second straight Ivy League basketball title by beating Harvard, 71-59. It was mid-way through the second half, however, before the Tigers could be assured of victory and the NCAA tournament berth that went with it.
With 8:39 remaining in the first half, the last place Crimson was leading 24-15, and mutterings of disbelief ran through the crowd. The beer was already on ice, the girls had made the arduous trek to the hinterlands of New Jersey, and the upstarts from Cambridge were winning.
Princeton Comes Back
Taking heed of their rooters' pleas, the Tigers rallied. Pete Campbell converted two fouls, Al Kaemmerlen scored on a rebound, and was fouled. Not settling for one point, the big center missed the free throw and tapped in his own rebound.
Two foul shots by Jack Whitehouse finally tied the score at 29-29 with 2:04 left in the half and Don Swan's jump shot gave the Tigers the lead for good with less than a minute remaining.
But the Crimson had one gasp left in the person of Gary Borchard. A second team All-Ivy selection last season, Borchard was holding fifth place in the league scoring race until he failed to score double figures in the last three games.
Borchard Sparks Drive
After Swan and Kaemmerlen had upped the Princeton advantage to five points at the beginning of the second half, Borchard gave the crowd a final scare. Scoring on twisting drives across the foul lane and on jump shots, the Crimson star made 11 points in the next ten minutes to keep the margin at five, 47-42. At this point six straight Tiger foul shots put the game out of reach.
Campbell led all the scorers with 25, including 15 foul shots that set a Princeton team record. Borchard netted 24.
The freshman team completed a successful weekend trip, winning its twelfth game against one loss, 67-57. After leading by only 28-25 at half time, the Yardlings broke away to win easily. Captain Sid Davis scored 24 points, mostly on fast breaks and outside jump shots. Lenny Strauss contributed 15 and Bob Inman 14.
