HYDC Calls Committee 'Illicit'

The HYRC won the victor's huckleberry wreath for their defense of the use Un-American Activities Committee last night, but most objective felt that a superior HYDC team outclassed them in the "great debate."

Taking the affirmative side of the proposal: "Resolved: That the HUAC should be abolished," HYDC speakers James G. Vaughter '63 and Charles A. Stevenson '63 condemned the Committee as "illicit in its operations, ineffective in holding hearings determine needed legislation, and a source of danger to Constitutional safeguards."

The Democrats proposed that "the importance between necessary investigations guaranteed civil liberties" can best corrected by abolishing the HUAC and its functions to the House Committee. "The job of investigating treason and subversion in the United States is by law a duty of the Committee--not the HUAC," asserted.
