Yale Triumphs in Big Three Meet; DeLone Breaks Shot Put Record

Illness, Injury Cripple Crimson Team

By Michael S. Lottman, (Special to the CRIMSON)

NEW HAVEN, Feb. 25 The powerful Yale track team ground out an inevitable 65 1/3-49 1/3 victory over crippled Harvard today in Coxe Cage. Princeton was third in the Big Three meet with 22 1/3 points.

It was a heart-breaking day for coach Bill McCurdy's Crimson squad. The varsity had pointed for an upset all season long, and might have beaten the Elis with a healthy squad. But valiant efforts by Mark Mullin and Tom Blod. Kett were thwarted by illness and injury, and the Crimson saw an early 31 1/2-8 1/2 lead inexorably disappear.

Stan Doten (61 ft., 7 1/2 in.), Ted Bailey (61-6), Roger Wilson (57-0), and Art Doten (55-2 1/2) swept the 35-lb. weight throw for the Crimson.

In the shot put, Rick deLone set a new Harvard record with a toss of 53 ft., 9 1/2 in., as he, Steve Cohen (52-3), and Sarge Nichols (50-0) added ten points in their event.

Crimson Takes Broad Jump

The third early event that the varsity bombed was the broad jump. Zeke Azikiwe got off the best leap of his life, 23 ft., 3 in., to take first, and Al Albright tied Yale's Jim Axtel for second at 22 ft., 9 1/2 in. But the fun was quickly over.

Bulldog coach Bob Giegengack put his two-mile ace, Bobby Mack, in the mile against Mark through a 3:10.0 three-quarters, but the Eli, a small, mechanical, and very precise runner, simply left Mullin behind in the final 440. He won by 40 yards in 4:13.7, a new Cage record.

Mullin looked tired and sick in the mile, but his ordeal was not yet over. After Gus Schumacher handed him a 12-yard lead in the two-mile relay, Mullin lost the margin and finished 15 yards behind Ned Roache of Yale--something that never before happened in Mullin's Harvard career. Anchored by Tommy Carroll, the Eli quartet won in 7:48.2.

Blodgett Ties for Third

With a pulled thigh muscle taped so tight he could not walk without a limp, Blodgett fought his way over 13 ft. in the pole vault, for a third place tie and one and one-half points. Princeton sopho-more Charlie Mitchell won the vault at 14 ft.

Blodgett watched as Jay Luck of Yale took the 60-yard hurdles in 7.4 for Cage and Yale marks. The meet's only double winner, Luck was first in the 60-yard dash in 6.3. Frank Yeomans equaled Luck's time in a heat to tie the Harvard indoor mark.

Yale's diminutive Jim Stack outran his arch-rival, Dick Edmunds of Princeton, in a 1.11.0 600. Edmunds had some measure of revenge when his mile relay squad whipped Yale in the Cage and Princeton record time of 3:17.8.

After the meet had been decided, Yale's Bill Flippin and Sam Streibert put the icing on the cake by clearing 6 ft., 6 in. in the high jump, setting new Cage and school marks.
