Vellucci Protests Liquor License

A beer and wine license recently approved for the Harvard faculty club by the city license commissioners drew charges of underhanded dealing yesterday from City Councilor Alfred E. Vellucci.

One of a limited number in Cambridge, the license became available when the Fraternal Order of Eagles failed to renew theirs earlier this year.

Vellucci said that local veterans' organizations had been seeking such licenses or years, but that somehow, secretly, word was transmitted immediately to Harvard." "Nobody in the city knew about that license," he said.

All liquor licenses must be advertised publicly before the Board of License Commissioners can approve their sale. According to Miss Blanche Ryan, secretary to the Board, the license was advertised once, in the papers of Feb. 2.

"We received no other applications," said Miss Ryan. "Just this one."

However, Vellucci maintained that the license was advertised only after Harvard had applied, not before. He attributed the move to "the cunning, shrewd Machiavellianism of Harvard University."

The license, a "club license," must still be approved by the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission before the city can issue it.
