M.I.T.'s basketball quintet tried hard to please a highly enthusiastic crowd last Saturday, but the boys from Tech lacked the skill to conquer the rapidly improving Harvard varsity. The final score: 62-54. Harvard.
Attempting to slow down the game by working carefully planned pattern plays, Tech managed to play as equals with Harvard for most of the first half. The Crimson gained a six-point lead six minutes after the tip-off on Gary B orchard's set shot from 15 feet out, but M.I.T. captain Dave Koch, maneuvering adeptly off the 1-3-1 offense plan, quickly erased the advantage.
With about seven minutes to go, Pete Kelley entered the fray for the Crimson with a devasting effect. Seconds after checking in he hit a set shot from 20 feet out. This was followed with another net-splitter, even more beautiful, from a greater distance.
For variation, Kelley's next basket was a lay-in on the break. Joe Deering moved into the picture with two quick lay-ins; these were followed in rapid succession by three neat fall-away jump shots by Denny Lynch.
Tech managed to pick up two points just before the half -time buzzer, but the damage was complete, and the score read 33333-20. Despite constant M.I.T. hustle, the Crimson experienced no anxiety for the remainder of the game.
Kelley again topped the varsity with 19 points; Lynch contributed 16, and 12 rebounds. Bill Danner also was a tiger on the boards with 12 rebounds.
The varsity plays at Northeastern tonight.
