The selection committee is looking for the following:

Fiske Scholarship

An American, or anyone, who can demonstrate an outstanding ability in some recognized field will be welcomed into the academic and extra-curricular life of Cambridge. Thus, the committee seeks a young man who, besides displaying overall proficiency, stands out markedly in some single field. Those who excel in athletics are welcome.

The Scholar should have the interest and ability to move easily in his new environment and at the same time expose his English friends to aspects of American life. He should be intellectually curious and have a real desire to broaden his overall education.

Each candidate's entire College record is scrutinized, and eight to ten men are selected for final interviews (for a half-hour at a time with two or three committee members. The interviews stress personality, initiative, knowledge of American and international affairs, and ability to communicate this knowledge fluently and rationally. From this group of eight to ten, a Fiske Scholar and a deJersey Scholar is chosen.

Harvard Studentship

The committee is composed of past winners, and so no single type of student is sought. The criteria are much the same for the Harvard Studentship as for the Fiske award. The committee is looking for an intelligent, interesting ambassador for the United States and for Harvard. The student is entrusted to live his year as he sees fit. The continuation of the Harvard Studentship tradition depends upon the man selected by those who best know the tradition, in fact, who helped make it.

Application

Applications--through the House Office or Senior Tutor--are due January 16; preliminary screening and early interviews will be held February 3, and final interviews a week later.
