Automation--and faulty automation at that--has finally infiltrated into our "spiritual" lives.
A broken automatic I.B.M. time clock bell-ringer is responsible for the silence emanating from Memorial Church bell tower yesterday and today.
Human hands have not performed the labor of love, the tolling of the bells every hour from 9 to 4, since 1956. Since then--and the moral seems clear--accidents have been often. Last year a broken cable quieted the bells for three days.
Hourly peals will resume tomorrow.
