Over 4,000 Summer School Students Register In Mem Hall Today for 85th Annual Session

A record enrollment of more than 4,000 students will register today at the Harvard Summer School, reputedly the oldest such school in the country.

Every state of the Union, in addition to 45 foreign countries, will be represented at registration. Half of the 150-man teaching faculty comes from Harvard, the others from 34 American universities and several foreign or secondary schools.

A convocation in Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. tomorrow will open the 85th session of the school. Howard Mumford Jones, Abbott Lawrence Lowell Professor of Humanities, and Robert Ulich, James Bryant Conant Professor of Education. Emeritus, will speak at the annual gathering, representing the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Education. Thomas E. Crooks '49, Director of the Summer School, will introduce the two professors.

The seven-week summer session includes a busy schedule of social and intellectual activities. A series of dances, regular Thursday afternoon lectures, and two major conferences highlight the program. Several extra-curricular groups have also made summer plans.

Tuesday, July 5:

8 a.m. Dormitories ready for occupancy.

Registration in Memorial Hall: A--F, 9-10:30 a.m.; G--M, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; N--Z, 1:30-3 p.m.; A--Z, 3-4 p.m.

First meal in Union, 12 noon-1:30 p.m.

Modern language placement tests: Emerson D, 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 6:

First Chapel service, 8:45 a.m., Appleton Chapel.

First meetings of all classes.

Placement tests for languages and Physics 1, Emerson D, 4:30 p.m.

Yard Punch, 3-5 p.m.

Convocation of Summer School, Memorial Hall, 8 p.m.

Thursday, July 7:

Filling of final Study Lists in Memorial Hall: A--K, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; L--Z, 1:30-4 p.m.

First afternoon lecture, Burr B, 3 p.m.

Required entry meeting, 4:30 p.m.

Civic Symphony Orchestra concert, 8:30 p.m., Sanders Theatre.

Two new facilities will be opened for Summer School use this year, Boylston Hall, an air-conditioned center for modern language instruction, will house most language courses. The newest residential area at Harvard. Quincy House, will serve 200 women.

In addition to Quincy, three other Houses--Kirkland, Eliot, and Winthrop--plus almost all the Freshman dormitories will be used by about 2,500 residential students. The Harvard Union will serve weekly meals; lunches will also be sold in Dudley House.

Summer sessions at Harvard began in 1871, when Professor Asa Gray instructed students in botany. This year marks the 35th continuous year, since a full-fiedged teaching program did not start until 1874.
