A surprisingly strong M.I.T. squad downed the inexperienced varsity wrestling team last night, 16-11, at Tech's DuPont Athletic Center. The Crimson, in it's first dual meet of the season, won decisions in three of its eight matches but failed to register a pin all evening.
Crimson captain Nick Estabrook scored Harvard's most impressive win of the meet, 3-0, over M.I.T. sophomore Jim Evans in the 137 pound division. Estabrook mastered his opponent's dancing style and almost pinned him early in the second period to tag Evans with his first defeat in three years. Evans was last year's New England freshman wrestling champion.
In another Harvard victory, George Doub decisioned the M.I.T. co-captain, Dave latham, in the 130-pound class. Doub gained his 4-2 point victory in a close, hard fought battle with an experienced opponent.
The Crimson wrestlers gained the remainder of their point total with Red Grant's point victory in the unlimited weight division and with a draw by Ernie edmundson in the 167-pound slot. Grant's victory in the heavy weight class was one of the few solid showings by a Harvard grappler all evening. After almost pinning his opponent early in the third period, the Crimson junior went on to shut out his Engineer foe, 4-0.
M.I.T. amassed its 16 point total by scoring solid decisions over two Crimson wrestlers, by squeaking by with one close point victory, and by registering the only pin of the evening.
