Harvard Students To Vote on Divestment From Israel in Inaugural HUA Election Survey
To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
Because of the recent series of letters regarding the Twentieth Century Week Program, we wish to state our position on the subject.
First of all, we certainly are not accusing the Twentieth Century Committee of "anti-Americanism," "anti-semitism" or "anti-Israelianism." We do, however, feel it regrettable that no representative of the State of Israel will have an opportunity of participating in the evening public panels in Sanders Theater.
Through Israel does not represent the "typical" underdeveloped nations of the Middle East, how much more typical of the underdeveloped nations of Africa is South Africa, which is to be represented at Twentieth Century Week? Because of the importance of the Arab-Israeli controversy, as well as the nature of the topics that are proposed for discussion (i.e. Foreign Policy, Economic Problems and National Aspirations) we believe it will be extremely difficult to keep this particular dispute from attaining some prominence, even with the cooperation of the moderators.
We realize that special seminars are being organized which will include Israeli speakers; however, only a limited number of individual students will be at such seminars. They will certainly represent but a fraction of the number who will be in Sanders Theater for the panel discussions.
We do not believe, however, that this omission of Twentieth Century Week should be the cause of a violent attack directed against that organization. The omission is regrettable, but is not of over-whelming consequence.
We appreciate the goals of Twentieth Century and would like to congratulate the Student Council for having sponsored such a worthy program. We wish them the best of luck. Barry M. Lando '61 President, Harvard Student Zionist Organization Norman Adler '62 Secretary-Treasurer, Harvard Hillel Caroline Herron '62 President, Radcliffe Hillel Peter Livingston '62 President, Harvard-Radcliffe Liberal Union
