8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
An anonymous $500 check from Leverett House best night put the 1960 Combined Charities Drive over its goal of $22,600, the highest total in history.
Yesterday's total amounted to a little over $2,500 in what co-chairmen Michael H. P. Belknap '63 and Thomas C. Jones, Jr. '63, formed a "really tremendous effort." The co-chairman called the House captains "they key to the drive" in the five day solleciting.
Complete tallies of the amounts collected have been completed through Thursday. At that time, collections totaled $20,139.
Leverett led the Houses with $2,356, followed closely by Quiney's $2,052. Dudley was at the bottom with $132. The Yard's overall total was $4,826.
In Thursday's solicitations, Eliot House was the largest donor, giving $490. Leverett and Adams, with $420 and $289.75, ranked second and third. The Yard contributed $1,101.10.
The House captains were: Donald E. Hughes '62 in Claverly Hall; Albert L. Jacobs, Jr. '61 in Dunster House; Leo Fishman '62, Kirkland; Philip C. Olsson '63, Eliot; Brandis H. Marsh '62 of Leverett; Joshua A. Young '63 in Adams House; Alan K. Henrikson '62, Quincy House; David S. Bogan '62, Lowell; and O. Yale Lewis '62 of Winthrop House.
The 1960 final total will be at least $900 over last year's collections of $21,657. In the 1959 drive, Eliot topped the Houses with $2,797, followed by Winthrop with $1,947. Loverett ran third with $1,914, and the always well-to-do Yard contributed $6,175.
This year's winning House--apparently Leverett will receive the Coop prize of $26 worth of phonograph records. In addition, a keg of beer will be awarded to the solicitors.
The highest total previously collected from the College was received in 1918, when a joint Student Council-Combined Charities drive netted $23,000. $6,000 of this sum, however, was ear-marked for the Council, leaving the Charities total at only $17,000.
