Varsity Track Squad Faces B.U. Today; Thomas to Jump

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The varsity track team will face its first real test of the season against B.U. Briggs Cage tonight after the 78-26 over M.I.T. last Wednesday.

Leading the Terriers in their first meet of the year will be co-captain John Thomas, who may come up with the first seven-foot high jump in Briggs Cage history. This event will be the highlight of the evening, but it is the only one conceded to B.U. in the toss-up meet.

Crimson coach Bill McCurdy will pin his hopes on the 35-1b, weight throw, the pole vault, the mile, the 1000-yard run, and the mile and two mile relays. In the -1b, weight throw, Art Doten could lead a possible Harvard sweep, but B.U. co-captain Chris Beasley may finish near the top.

Pole Vault

Tom Blodgett should give the Crimson a first place in the pole vault but there will be a dogfight behind him for the rest of the points in that event. Miler Mark Mullin will take a crack at the present meet record of 4:20.8 if conditions are right, but he will face serious competition from B.U.'s Freeman.

In the 1000-yard run, the Crimson's August Schumacher and captain Fred Howard are favored to take the honors. Freeman, who is noted for his finishing , will also pose a threat in this event. The 600-yard run could be the race of the sight, however, as a close duel is expected between Don Kirkland of Harvard and Quirk of B.U.

Crimson depth in the one and two mile relays may have the edge in these events. On the other hand, experts predict a Terrier victory in the two mile run, though Mullin could make it a very close race.
