New Fraternity Picks Senator Goldwater As Grand Wizard

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Inspired by Senator Barry Goldwater's remark that "where fraternities are not allowed, communism flourishes," a group of students has organized lots Beta Phi to combat leftist tendencies at Harvard.

The new fraternity's first action will be to send a crimson paddle to the Senator in recognition of his election to the post of Honorary Grand Wizard of Iota Beta Phi. Members will mail the paddle this afternoon at 2 p.m. from the post office on Mt. Auburn Street after a march from the corner of Bow and Plympton Streets.

The following letter will accompany their package:

"Dear Senator Goldwater:

"Inspired by your excellent comments on the lack of fraternities at Harvard, we have formed a fraternity dedicated to the spirit of your remarks. We decided upon the name Iota Beta Phi (IBF for Inexperienced But Faithful) as having special relevance where you are concerned.

"We sent you this paddle to symbolize your election to the post of Honorable Grand Wizard of Iota Beta Phi and because we regard it as the best means for your end.

"Sincerely, your loyal fraternity brothers."

Hugh Barber '60-4, President of the HYRC and leader of the Goldwater faction, said that he is "rather amused by the effort. It is in line with typical liberal Democratic tactics of laughing at things you disagree with."

"I certainly don't plan any counter-protest," said Barber, "but sometimes opposition does have a way of materializing."

A spokesman for SAE, the only other Harvard fraternity, declared, "We have no comment now, and we will continue to have no comment."
