Robert L. Pillsbury '61, a tackle, has been selected by his teammates as the most valuable player on the 1960 varsity football team. Pillsbury, of Winthrop House and Wollaston, received the Frederick Greely Crocker Award, emblematic of the MVP honor, at the annual Harvard Club of Boston banquet for the team last night.
A strong contender for All-Ivy honors, Pillsbury is a three-letter winner in football and has been a starter for two years.
At the banquet, Thomas C. McLaughlin '61, of Adams House and Hastings, Neb., received the William Paine LaCrotx Award "for enthusiasm, loyalty, and team spirit." Co-captain of the J.V. team, the 170-pound center saw varsity action only in the Yale game, but, according to coach John M. Yovicsin, "his contribution to Harvard football was a real one."
President Pusey told the gathering of players, coaches, and alumni, "We like to feel that you seniors will be glad you came to Harvard not because we don't have the adulation for football players as at other places but for the perspective that we can care deeply about football without making it the extent of our concern."
Pusey praised the 1960 Yale team and said that it was "wonderful" that the Ivy League, under its rules and policies, could produce such a "superior team."
"Yale came back after last season, and you can too," Pusey added. "You did not hitch your wagon to a star this season; you came back," the President said, referring to the squad's performance after the loss of quarterback Charlie Ravenel.
Terry F. Lenzner, 1960 captain, introduced his senior teammates and singled out Ravenel, who received a standing ovation from the gathering. Lenzner's successor, Alex W. Hart, termed the season "nothing to get drunk over." He moved on to what he called "a pleasanter topic," said of next season "on paper we don't have it," but added, "There is no reason why we can't be up top with the rest of them."
Other head table guests were Dean Watson, Yovicsin, undergraduate manager W. Michael Kuehl '61, Charles Devens '32, Varsity Club President, and Forrester A. Clark '29, Harvard Club President and toastmaster.
