With high hopes for a comeback from last year's dismal showing, the varsity cross country team will face a fair to middling Cornell squad this morning at 10 a.m. in Ithaca.
Jed Fitzgerald, Mark Mullin, and Ed Hamlin will lend the varsity resurgence against Cornell and for the rest of the season. Fitzgerald had become one of the best runners in the East and the Crimson's inspirational leader before he was sidelined in 1959 by an injured Achilles tendon.
When Fitzgerald was hurt last fall, Mullin, then a sophomore, took over as the squad's pace-setter and recorded a strong sixth-place finish in the Harvard-Yale. Princeton meet. Holder of the University mile record of 4:10.6, Mullin has good speed and thrives on hilly courses.
Hamlin came to the attention of Crimson fans last spring in the Yale track meet, when he won the mile in the freshman record time of 4:15.3, took the 880 in 1:58.7, and rallied from far behind to finish second in the two-mile. Against Dartmouth, he won these three races and came right back after the two-mile to run the fastest leg in the mile relay. His endurance, obviously, is beyond question.
Behind these are Was Hildreth, Harvard's only Boston Marathon medal winner; John Evans, a surprising and hertofore totally inconspicuous senior; and Bob Knapp, Jim Bonnar, Greg Baldwin, Don Kirkland, Gus Schumacher, and Gerry Webb.
Ray Westendorp, Pete Slater, and Frank Brochman head a Big Red squad which has defeated Colgate by a perfect score and lost to Penn state just as decisively. If Eric Groon, whose where abouts are not being revealed by Cornell, returns, the Big Red's stock will rise
