The cross country team will take on a decided underdog this afternoon, meeting the University of Massachusetts squad at 3 p.m. on the Franklin Park course. The varsity will be seeking its third consecutive win.
Harvard took last year's meet handily, but since then two unidentified UMass runners have bettered Mark Mullin's winning time. A third Massachusetts harrier, David Balch, met varsity captain Jed Fitzgerald several times in high school, always in close races.
The Crimson will field virtually the same team it has used thus far this season. Mullin, Fitzgerald, and Ed Hamlin should all finish in the first half-dozen, although Fitzgerald has been somewhat off his stride this fall. Regular track captain Fred Howard will also race. Howard has decided to complete with the cross country team steadily.
The Yardling team will also run this afternoon. Ed Meehan heads a fairly good team that should defeat the UMass Freshmen easily.
