The Crimson JV football team romped over a small, ineffective Tufts contingent today, with the entire squad contributing to the 45-6 victory. The JV's blocking and tackling so devastated the 18 Tufts players that the game's two final quarters were cut to 12 minutes each.
Four quarterbacks saw action in an effort to find the right second-string quarterback to run behind starter Terry Bartolet in the Columbia game. Grady Watts, Chuck Kinney, Ted Halaby, and Jim Ullyot are vying for the position.
The Crimson set up its first score with an interception on its own 35. The JV's fumbled, recovered, and drove down the field in seven plays. Hank Hatch made the touchdown. Tufts fumbled the kick-off, and Bill Taylor clicked after four plays to make the score 15 to 0.
Tufts' lone score was the result of still another fumble. The Crimson safety man bobbled a punt in the second quarter, and this time Tufts recovered. John Fitch scored the touchdown. The JV's tallied twice themselves in the period, however, on runs by Dave Ward and Grady Watts. Fred Bartel ran for the extra points.
Tufts never crossed midfield in the second half. After receiving the kick, the visitors failed to make the yardage on a fourth and one situation, and Hatch collected his second touchdown of the day on a pair of 15-yard runs.
In the fourth quarter, Harvard added a safety and another touchdown, on an Ullyot pass to end Mike Adams. Just before the end of the game, Ullyot threw another scoring pass, but it was called back on a penalty.
By the end of the game, the Crimson had emptied its bench.
