Providence College and Boston University will take on the varsity cross country team this afternoon at 3:15 p.m., in what should be the Crimson's first win of the 1960 season. The meet will be at Franklin Park, "home" for both B.U. and Harvard.
It has been at least eight years since either Providence or Boston defeated the varsity, and the Crimson's opponents this afternoon do not appear to be any stronger than those of previous meetings. The Harvard squad, on the other hand, is considerably improved over last year's team. The varsity's top three--captain Jed Fitzgerald, Mark Mullin, and Ed Hamlin--are all potentially outstanding runners, although only Mullin ran in top form against Cornell last Saturday.
Today's meet will cover five miles of not-too-rugged golf course. The race, according to Crimson Coach Bill McCurdy, will emphasize speed rather than endurance.
Still smarting from the 22-33 upset at the hands of Cornell, the Crimson will field much the same team as it did Saturday although both Mullin and Hamlin are suffering from slight colds. Besides Fitzgerald, Bob Knapp, Greg Baldwin, Wes Hildreth, Jack Benjamin, Gerry Webb, Jim Bonnar, Don Kirkland, and John Evans will probably run. The Crimson's twelfth man will either be Linc Hollister, Gus Schumacher, Dick Hawkins, or track captain Fred Howard.
To win, B.U. or Providence will have to exploit the Crimson's lack of depth, evidenced in the Cornell meet.
