Faculty Approves Change in Name For Semitic Languages Department

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted yesterday to change the title "Department of Semitic Languages and History" to "Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures," effective Feb. 1.

The change came as a result of a move by Sir Hamilton A. R. Gibb, University Professor and heads of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and by Frank M. Gross, Jr., Curator of the Semitic Museum, to expand the scholarly base of that department in order to accommodate studies that are related to, but nor included in, Semitic culture. These include Iranian, Turkish, and other such fields of research.

Also at the meeting, Dean Bundy announced the appointment of George A. Miller, professor of Psychology, as acting chairman of the Department of Psychology. He will replace Edwin B. Newman, Lecturer in Psychology, who will be on a sabbatical leave for research purposes during the Spring Term. Newman plans to act as a consultant for the Lincoin Laboratory of M.I.T.

In other action, the Committee on Educational Policy presented the preliminary announcement of courses to be offered in the Summer School of Arts and Sciences and of Education this year.
