Howard Mumford Jones '14 will become Abbott Lawrence Lowell Professor of the Humanities next July 1, replacing Edmund Wilson, whose one year appointment ends this spring. For the first time since its creation, the Lowell professorship will be a permanent appointment and will go to a regular faculty member.
Jones is an outstanding scholar in the field of American literature. He is a former president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is currently editor-in-chief of the John Harvard Library.
The Lowell Professorship was established in 1956, at the same time as were the Ford Professorships.
