Economics Department Will Endorse Kuznets

Simon S. Kuznets has been recommended for a position in the Economics Department, the Crimson learned recently. Currently a professor of political economy at Johns Hopkins, Kuznets is one of the nation's foremost economists.

Arthur Smithies, chairman of the Economics Department, confirmed reports of the recommendation but noted that the appointment must still be approved by the Corporation.

Kuznets, who received an honorary degree at last June's commencement, will personally continue the work in comparative economic economic growth that he is now pursuing at Johns Hopkins. In his most recent work, he has pioneered the application of statistical methods to studies of growth trends, an important field of economics heretofore neglected.

Developed Income Accounting

In the past Kuznets' main concern has been with national income accounting a field which he was also instrumental in developing. Income accounting was closely related to his investigation of fluctuations in the national economy.

Although the pending appointment is to a regular teaching professorship it is expected that Kuznets will bring some research assistants from his staff in New York to aid his research.

When President Pusey awarded Kuznets an honorary Doctor of Science degree at Commencement he described him as "a scientist-statistician who with patient skill measures the ups and downs in our economy." Kuznets was Frank W. Taussig Professor of Economics here last year.
