Dartmouth Whips Crimson Quintet

Dwarfed by Dartmouth's towering forward line, the varsity basketball squad fought gamely before bowing to the Big Green, 66 to 53 last night at Hanover. Neither team was at its best, but Dartmouth controlled the boards well enough to fight off periodic Crimson threats.

Paced by forward Gary Borchard, the varsity took an early lead and held it for the first five minutes. With both squads playing sloppy, inconsistent basketball, Dartmouth slowly caught the Crimson and edged ahead.

Some fine shooting from the floor and foul line by Borchard kept the varsity in contention during the first half. Despite his 12 points, however, the Crimson trailed, 29 to 20 at intermission.

The Crimson roared back in the second half, pulling to within three points on several occasions. Bolstered by a stubborn zone defense, the Crimson stuck with the Big Green for most of the final 20 minutes. With five minutes to go, the varsity was three points down, and a minute later Dartmouth still had only a 51-46 margin.

But the Big Green caught fire in the closing minutes, as one terrific fast break after another ran the Dartmouth lead to as much as 16 points.

For Dartmouth, 6 ft., 8 1/2 in. Dave Farnsworth, 6 ft. 4 in. Gary Vandeweghe, and 6 ft. 3 in. George Ramming dominated the rebounding. On offense, the Big Green was often able to get four and five shots in a row, while the Crimson had to hit on its first attempt or lose the ball.

And the varsity rarely did hit on its first attempt. The Crimson made only 19 field goals in 74 tries, for a 25.6 percentage. Forward Ed Cuffe, who collected 15 points in the second half to lead the squad with 19, needed 24 shots for his six baskets.

Guard Chuck Kaufman headed the Big Green's vaunted fast break with his usual skill and topped the Dartmouth scoring with 13. Forward Bryant Barnes added 12, and guard Walt Sosnowski contributed 10. Blocking up the center in the Crimson's defensive alignment, Bry Danner excelled in limiting Vandeweghe to eight points and Ramming to seven.

Borchard followed Cuffe for the Crimson, totaling 17. Danner had nine points to go with his 11 rebounds
