Kaufmann Paces Swimming Squad To Easy Win Against Army, 61-34

Led by Bob Kaufmann's two first places, the varsity swimming team easily defeated Army, 61 to 34, Saturday night.

Kaufmann won both the 220-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke, the latter in a time of 2:13.6. This was just 0.3 seconds shy of his time at last year's Yale freshman meet, when he broke Harvard and national freshman standards.

Crimson swimmers officially won six of nine individual events, and took the first two places in four of them. Also, Dwight Bissell won the 100-yard freestyle, but was disqualified for missing his third turn.

Other Crimson winners were Fred Cooley in the 50-yard freestyle, Eric Johnson in the dive, Jim Coffman in the 200-yard butterfly, and Doug McCartney in the 200-yard breast stroke. McCartney has shown particular improvement this season.

Coach Bill Brooks fielded a strong medley relay team of Sandy Maw, McCartney, Fred Elizalde, and Bill Zentgraf; this group swam the 400 yards in 4:00.7.

Perhaps significant is the Crimson's winning so many firsts without stacking the lineup, a reversal of last month's Springfield results. A massive effort will still be required, however, to beat Navy in the Annapolis pool this Saturday.
