The Medical School has announced the merger of the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology into a single department to be called the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
George Parker Berry, Dean of the Medical School, said that this union "will create for both disciplines greater opportunities to reach out toward new frontiers of knowledge."
The decision to combine the two Departments followed two years of study by a committee at the Med. School. The committee's report included a plan to reorganize both the departmental structure and the school's teaching programs.
Dr. Berry pointed out that the prime concern of the new department will be preparing full-time teachers and investigators to meet the rapidly expanding need in this field. Students specializing in obstetrics and gynecology must devote a minimum of two years to general surgical training, three years to obstetrics and gynecology, and two years to the basic medical sciences.
