Hard-Hitting Freshman Nine Faces UNH, Brown in Week-end Contests

As midseason approaches, the freshman baseball team, like other squads, takes a quick look behind and a concerned look ahead to the crucial games on the schedule. The two-game series immediately facing the Yardlings is probably their most important weekend this season.

Today at 3 p.m. the nine will play the University of New Hampshire at Soldiers Field. Coach Adolph Samborski, who has been pleased with the team's pitching thus far, has named Al Yarbo as his starting hurler. The curve-balling righthander gained a win over Holy Cross and was active in relief in the Yardlings' first two games.

Showing the best record on the mound staff (2-0) is Roy Williams, who will throw against Brown at Aldrich Field in Providence tomorrow. Williams has pitched well in both his wins, especially in his near shutout at Boston University, Tuesday, and helps his own cause by his strength at the plate.

Jack Heffernan's Brown Cubs, if as good as past Bruin freshman teams, may cool off the high-flying Crimson nine. The Yardlings have played up to every pre-season expectation, and Samborski hopes the team's recent well-balanced play will continue.

Heroes on the '62 team have changed from game to game and often from inning to inning. Right now the whole team is hitting well and each pitcher on the four-man staff has been almost equally effective. Consistent leaders at the plate for the first half of the season have been lefthanded batters Phil Bernstein and Mike Drummey, and captain Dave Morse.

Now that Williams and second baseman Jim Dwinell have begun to hit the ball hard, the Yardlings have answered a pre-season question about whether they could hit. Samborski will know this weekend whether they can keep it up.
