In a 9-0 shut-out at Annapolis yesterday, the undefeated Varsity tennis team romped over Navy to gain its fourth victory of the season. Although lacking the services of ailing coach Jack Barnaby, the netmen lost only two sets in 16 matches (7 of which were unofficial).
Playing at first singles, Captain Ned Weld routed Navy's Dave Houghton 6-2, 6-3, while Bob Bowditch crushed the Middies' number two man, Marv Osburn, 6-2, 6-2. In the only close contest of the day, Tim Gallwey in third position defeated Nick Temple 8-10, 6-4, 7-5.
The number four, five, and six men also disposed of their opponents with little difficulty as Bill Wood beat Bill Moore 6-3, 6-1; Jim Cameron took Mike Willsey 6-4, 8-6; and Laurie Pratt defeated Rick Fluegel 6-0, 6-1.
Although only the first six singles matches were counted under Eastern Intercollegiate League rules, the teams also played five unofficial singles. Pete Smith, Scott Custer, Dick Chute, Langden Smith, and Denny Briggs all triumphed for the Crimson.
In doubles competition the Crimson netmen fared equally well, sweeping the three official and two unofficial matches. Weld and Bowditch, playing as the first team, defeated Houghton and Moore 7-5, 6-2, while the second team of Wood and Gallwey crushed Temple and Osburn 6-2, 6-1.
Playing third doubles for the Crimson, Pratt and Cameron overcame Willsey and Jerry Parsons 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the second match of the day, which ran to three sets.
