Continuing its defense of the Eastern Intercollegiate League title, the varsity tennis team travels down to Annapolis and Philadelphia this weekend to take on Navy and a surprisingly strong Penn squad.
Both the Midshipmen and the Quakers are traditionally patsies in a league dominated by the Crimson and Yale. Navy, whom the varsity meets today, lost to Dartmouth--the third best team in the league--by 8-1, and should not offer terribly much opposition. Penn, however, held a powerful Yale team to a 6-3 margin Wednesday, and will put up a good fight on its home courts, although the Crimson must still be considered a fairly solid favorite.
Fred Vinton and Jorge Lemann, the fourth and fifth singles men, will not be making the trip for the varsity. Thus, Bill Wood will move up to fourth position, with Jim Cameron and Laurie Pratt playing fifth and sixth. Captain Ned Weld, Bob Bowditch, and Tim Gallwey remain in the first three slots.
Weld and Bowditch continue as the number one doubles team, and Wood and Gallwey, a new pair set up because Lemann and Vinton will miss the trip, will play second. The third doubles team is indefinite, with Pratt and Cameron, Langden Smith and Scott Custer, and Dick Chute and Denny Briggs as possibilities.
The team will play ten (or possibly eleven) singles and five doubles in both matches, although only six and three count for EIL standings. Pete Smith is at seventh singles, but may not see action in the doubles because Bob Schwartzman, his regular partner, cannot make the trip. Custer will be in the eighth spot, followed by Langden Smith, Chute, and Briggs, in no particular order.
