The Freshman nine picked up its second win behind Al Yarbro yesterday, edging by a strong Holy Cross team, 4 to 3, in a game marred by wildness. Though Yarbro improved as the game wore on, the Crimson victory was preserved primarily by the excellent defensive work in the infield.
With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, third baseman Mike Drummey stopped a hard ground ball to his left, tagged the runner from second and threw to Marc Holden completing the double play. Twice Yarbro pitched himself out of similar situations by striking out the last batter in the inning.
Though the Crimson got only four hits, the team looked much better than in its two previous games, and Coach Adolph Sambrowski found a strong first line pitcher in Yarbro.
Center fielder Phil Bernstein accounted for two hits and batted in the team's two earned runs. With two out in the fifth, captain Dave Morse beat out a throw to first base while two men romped across the plate. Morse was first ruled out, but Samborski protested, and the homeplate umpire overruled his colleague.
